Southern England's climbing scene can look forward to the launch of a big new climbing centre in July 2010. Reading Climbing Centre is being developed by John Dunne, the man behind Manchester Climbing Centre and the new Harrogate Climbing Centre that opens this month.

John is building on a lifelong climbing career, which includes first ascents of many modern grit classics such as New Statesman at Ilkley and Widdop Wall at Widdop.

Reading Climbing Centre will cater for every level. There will be fully trained instructors available for those who've not climbed before, as well as routes of all grades for the regular climber.

MCC chief route-setter Andy Jack, and British Bouldering Team member and regular route-setter Dave Barrans will be leading a team to provide top quality routes for the 100 roped lines and huge bouldering area. Part of the building's roof is being is being raised to house a higher section, which will include a competition wall.

There will also be a café on site so you can watch the action with a coffee and a cake once you've done your hard work, and a retail shop.

John Dunne said:

“Reading is one of the few major towns in the UK without a big climbing wall. I'm really excited to be going into a new area and bringing a great new centre to the south of England.

This is set to be one of the biggest centres in the country, and we hope to continue the great route-setting, instructing and atmosphere that we have in our existing centres.”

The website www.readingclimbingcentre.com will be launched within the next couple of weeks - check it for updates on the centre's development, opening information and offers.

Long-awaited! Unfortunately about six years too late for me...but I'd be surprised if this wasn't going to be a busy and very successful venue.

At long last! The last thing I heard this had fallen at the final hurdle, glad it's still going ahead.

Excellent - at last there is a public face to back the rumours up. And it is a relief to know that there is someone with experience behind it too, rather than a sports centre-type set up. I really hope this works out.

Out of interest, where exactly is the building?

In an industrial estate just off Elgar road.
