Maddy Cope: Climbing the unknown in Mongolia
Mammut UK athlete and climber, Madeleine Cope, has just returned from a three-week trip to Mongolia – not the first place you think of as a climbing location!
Did you know that over 20,000 tonnes of batteries are thrown away and sent to landfill sites in the UK each year*? No, we didn't either until our director Paul Casey attended a recent trade conference and learnt of GP Batteries' bid to reduce the 600 million batteries thrown away in the UK every year*.
"Recharge The Outdoors" has been developed to challenge both retailers and consumers to switch to eco-friendly rechargeable batteries and recycle single-use disposable batteries in a bid to help reduce our impact on the environment. A quick poll of our staff team across the country confirmed that we are all in agreement and with immediate effect we have stopped selling primary use batteries. Our remaining stock will be passed onto local good causes as we now have dedicated stands in each shop packed full of information on the new re-chargeable batteries that you can buy along with chargers and powerbanks.
In addition, we will shortly have the facility in all of our shops for you to recycle your single use batteries. When batteries end up in landfill, the heavy metals in them can turn toxic and seep into the environment. Switching to a rechargeable battery such as GP Batteries' ReCyko+ Pro will significantly reduce the environmental damage generated by discarded disposable batteries. GP's ReCyko+ Pro can be recharged up to 1500 times; meaning for each battery used, 1,500 less single- use disposable batteries will have to be used and recycled or sent to landfill.
As a company we continually review our impact on the environment. We are sure you agree that this is a great step towards reducing waste. To celebrate signing up to the Recharge the Outdoors campaign, The Climbers Shop is offering GP Batteries ReCyko+ Battery and Charger Pack at an introductory price of £20.
