The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Field Safety Manager to help ensure field-deployed activity is undertaken to the highest possible standards of safety. The successful candidate will provide expert advice on safe working practices in remote regions, such as the Antarctic.

Purpose

• Working as part of the Field Operations team you will help ensure field-deployed activity is undertaken to the highest possible standards of safety.
• You will use your experience of working in polar and other remote environments to assess, plan and implement safe systems of work for field-deployed teams.

Duties

• Responsible for developing and managing a field safety system to ensure all fieldwork is adequately risk assessed, safety policies, procedures and contingencies are in place and fully documented
• Provide expert advice on safe working practices in remote and hostile environments, particularly the polar regions
• Work closely with the Clothing Manager to provide expert guidance on the specification, provision and issue of polar clothing
• Plan, implement and manage a programme of field safety training under the guidance of the Head of Field Operations
• Support Head of Field Operations to manage Field SAR arrangements, contingency, training and exercises
• Work with other Safety Managers to share knowledge and ensure consistency of approach where applicable
• Actively drive collaboration with other National Programmes and polar operators to share knowledge and exchange information
• Drive continuous improvement of the safety system, processes and culture
• Undertake safety surveys, inspections and audits
• Prepare written reports of findings, recommendations for corrective and preventative measures and ensure follow up actions are completed
• Contribute to post-accident/incident investigations
• Maintain relevant documentation and records
• Support the wider Field and Operations team as required
