The Lake District National Park is one of 15 National Parks in the UK. The Park is the largest in England, with high fells, deep glacial lakes and thriving rural communities, it welcomes over 17 million visitors and local residents each year. It's the Lake District National Park's job to inspire a sense of freedom and wellbeing for the nation so people and the spectacular landscape can flourish together.

About the role

We are looking for a Fell Top Assessor to work with our Weatherline Service to assess and report on the fell conditions from the summit area of Helvellyn (and other fells as required) from December through to April. The role is to provide information and advice to other fell users to ensure safe and responsible use of the mountain. The role will also require basic rights of way maintenance on the routes up to Helvellyn and other paths as required. You will be an ambassador for the Lake District National Park.

The Fell Top Assessor role will mostly be working Wednesday and Thursdays throughout the season but will vary and additional days may be required. You will be working alone, or leading a team of paying guests.

You may also run our winter skills courses during your Fell Top Assessors days and other summer mountaineering skills days as required. The days are designed to teach people how to summit safely at all levels of experience.

Why the service matters

The weatherline service encourages safety on the fells and a boots on the ground view. It gives a vitally accurate account of conditions on the fells for the Lake District's 18 million visitors each year and local residents. It provides the opportunity to learn new skills via the winter training and summer courses run by our Fell Top Assessors.

About you

This is a role for someone with considerable winter mountaineering experience and skills, holds a valid winter mountain leader qualification and a valid first aid certificate.

You will have an excellent level of fitness, be self-motivated, driven and enthusiastic and have excellent people skills.

You must have the ability to write concise reports, assess snow and ice conditions and use a map and compass.

A key part of your job will be to update the Weatherline website and actively run the social media channel @lakesweather.

You must be familiar with Microsoft Office and have web entry skills - including photo / video uploading and interested in content generation.

You will be flexible to work weekends and week days, be on call as required during the Fell Top Assessor season and ideally be available to work during the summer months to run various skills courses.
