Cameron was nominated by the public as an individual who 'celebrates achievement, accomplishment and the spirit of adventure' in the mountains. He joins a list of previous esteemed winners, including Dr Adam Watson, Jimmy Marshall, Myrtle Simpson and Ian Sykes.

Commenting on his award, Cameron told Fort WIliam Mountain Festival: "I'm thrilled that there is now a national recognition of the direct link between our hills and wild places and the social history, folklore, traditional music and culture of Scotland.

"And I'm delighted to be joining a very special group of people who have, in many different ways, contributed so much to all these aspects of our national heritage. I'm genuinely humbled."

Known to many for his multiple books and through the numerous TV programmes he produced for the BBC on outdoor themes ranging from rock climbing to rambling, Cameron has over 25 years of experience in broadcasting.

Richard Else, broadcaster and former winner of The Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture, told the Festival: "Cameron's award is richly deserved. He's been - and remains - a passionate campaigner for our all-important wild places and through his BBC television programmes has shared that love and concern with thousands of people."

A former Chairman of the Nevis Partnership, Cameron is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and is Patron of Mountain Aid and Scottish Orienteering. Cameron has previously received two Lifetime Achievement Awards; one in 2010 from the Periodical Publishers Association Scotland for his services to magazine publishing, and the other in 2015 at the National Adventure Awards. In 2016 Cameron was presented with the Oliver Brown Award by the Scots Independent newspaper for his work in showcasing Scotland.

Suilven?

aye

That's the Eastern end of Suilven, up in Assynt.  Cameron is on the main summit.

Look forward to seeing Cameron get his award.  I remember his Wilderness Walks series from the mid 1990s very well indeed.  So well in fact that I could probably quote much of it still (recorded it off the telly and used to watch them regularly).  His Ladhar Bheinn and An Teallach trips had a big impact on me.
