BMC in Last Ditch Appeal for Mend Our Mountains

With just 12 days left of its Mend Our Mountains campaign, the BMC are calling on the hill-going public to lend their support.  The campaign is relying on crowd funding to raise money for eight different path repair projects on some of the most heavily-trodden hills in England and Wales.

Over 1000 people have so far pledged between them north of £55,000, but with a target of £100,000 to aim for before the whole show closes on Monday 9th May, time is growing short.

In exchange for their support donors will receive a reward. Those already claimed include a day out with comedian and TGO columnist Ed Byrne, starring in a Trail magazine feature, going for a walk in the Cairngorms with long-distance walker Chris Townsend, and masterclasses with top climbers like Steve McClure, James McHaffie and Calum Muskett. Experiences still up for grabs include watching the sunset from Snowdon, a whole season of mentored climbing and riding in a helicopter over the Yorkshire Dales.

Carey Davies, BMC hill walking officer, said: 'The response to Mend Our Mountains so far has shown that many walkers, climbers and outdoor enthusiasts care strongly about looking after the mountain landscape.'

'It is a challenging time for the bodies which ‘look after’ some of our most important landscapes. Booming visitor numbers and smaller budgets, compounded by the extensive damage of recent flooding, means that many national park authorities are struggling to keep up with the ongoing challenge of erosion.'

'But we want to send as loud a signal as possible that we are prepared to do what we can to stop mountain erosion. These hills are ours to climb and ours to care for. The more we raise in this campaign the stronger this message will be.'

Mend Our Mountains is working with eight National Parks and is supported by Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott CBE and Julia Bradbury, as well as brands including Costwold Outdoor, DMM, Alpkit and Steep Edge.
