Taking place from April to October, the walks - which range from one to 10 miles - will be staged anywhere from urban parks and stately homes to Snowdon.

Dave Clark, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's aged 44, said:

'As a sports fanatic, being diagnosed with Parkinson’s has inevitably meant that some of the things that I used to do to keep fit are that much harder now.'

'Walking gets the heart pounding and also helps me with flexibility and balance, so I am honoured to be the Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK in 2016.'

'I’d like to invite everyone, whatever their level of fitness, to get sponsored and join any of the Walk for Parkinson’s events, even to only walk a mile. Together we can raise much-needed funds to help find a cure.'

As part of the fundraising drive (or rather, walk) this September Dave, with the support of some well-known sportspeople, will be walking the Coast to Coast route from St Bees in Cumbria to Robin Hood’s Bay in the North York Moors. He expects the 200 mile trip to take 13 days. Check out his Justgiving page.

Entry for the standard walks costs £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s. All walkers will receive a fundraising pack with tips and advice, sponsorship forms and a T-shirt to wear on the day. There is no minimum sponsorship required to take part, but as organisers are hoping to raise over £315,000 from the 35 events, they suggest at least £50.

All money raised will help to provide support and information for people affected by Parkinson’s, say the charity, and to fund research into better treatments and a cure.
