The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) got up and running for the winter season today. Unfortunately there's barely any snow to report on.
From now until spring daily avalanche information reports will be posted for the six operational areas: Glen Coe, Lochaber, Creag Meagaidh, Southern Cairngorms, Northern Cairngorms and Torridon. But thanks to the unseasonably warm spell, today's inaugural posts make dismal reading:
In the Southern Cairngorms it's been 'a very mild start to this season. Plateau areas such as Glas Maol have no snow with patchy soft wet snow restricted to gullies and sheltered hollows on North to East aspects above 950 metres.'
And up in the Northwest - 'the Torridon mountains are mostly bare of snow with only a few patches high up below the summit ridges and mainly on the east end of Beinn Eighe. Unfortunately the mild wet weather is set to continue.'
On the plus side, and we're grasping at straws here, the avalanche hazard is reported as low everywhere - bar Creag Meagaidh.
