In April the Pennine Way will be half a century old. To celebrate the 50th birthday of Britain's first official long distance footpath, National Trails are inviting the public to join a mass-walking event called Walk the Way in a Day.

Fear not: No one's being asked to slog all 268 miles of it. Instead the idea is for 50 separate circular walks to take place on the same day, which between them cover the full length of the trail.

With a wide variety of Pennine landscapes to choose from, and options for high or low level sections, there's a walk to suit people of all abilities.

'The Pennine Way holds a special place in people’s hearts' said Anne Clark of National Trails.

'[I]t’s a real challenge and not everyone has time or energy to tackle it in one go. The Walk the Way in a Day events give everyone the opportunity to be part of a really special walking event, and to have a wonderful walk too.'

Anyone's welcome to join in, and there is no official signing up process for the event, which takes place 25th April.

All you need to do is visit the Pennine Way section of the National Trails website to select your walk, and download a map and detailed walking directions. Then let National Trails know which walk you intend to cover, by email or on Facebook
