The third annual Great Lakeland 3Day takes place over the May bank holiday weekend, and has proven so popular this year that it's a sell-out.

Over 200 competitors will take part in the three-day mountain running journey, which kicks off at Pooley Bridge on the northern tip of Ullswater on Saturday 3rd. There are four different classes, with courses ranging from a relaxed 65km (2899m ascent) to the very tough looking Elite class at 133km and over 8000m ascent in the three days.

Organisers are promising a 'grand tour of some of the best Lakeland ridges, summits and valleys', though the precise routes of the top three classes are a closely guarded secret. In the best traditions of the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon competitors have been promised a surprise at the start, says Race Director Shane Ohly: 'The LAMM has a deserved reputation for surprising competitors on the first day with an unexpected change of venue or logistic and I wanted to embrace this idea for the GL3D.'

There's a bit of light hearted fun too for those who aren't looking to push themselves.

'New for 2014 is the C Course' says Shane, 'which is specifically aimed at walkers and the slowest runners and features checkpoints in cafe's! Because we allow competitors to simply enter the event and then choose their desired course on the day we can't be certain how popular it is going to be. However, the record number of entries suggests it'll be very popular.'
