Volunteers are being marshalled for a mass litter pick in the Lake District in early April. Fancy helping out, on foot or by boat?

Teams from Friends of the Lake District, the Lake District National Park, the National Trust and regional universities will come together to clean up the Rydal, Grasmere and Elterwater area on Saturday 5 April from 9am to 4pm.

Volunteers will be on foot collecting litter around the paths, woods and car parks, while canoeists tackle the lake shores.

Writer and Friends of the Lake District Patron Bill Bryson had this to say:

‘Litter in a National Park is just, well, completely out of order! My mantra to you all who visit and enjoy the Lake District is ‘stop the drop’. I don’t want to see lots of litter when walking around Rydal, Grasmere or any of the Lakes.'

‘Congratulations to Friends of the Lake District and their army of volunteers in giving up their weekend time to clean up this beautiful place. We need more public spirited local actions like this if we are ever going to tackle litter pollution in our countryside.’

Organisers are hoping for as many helpers as possible, and would welcome anyone including experienced canoeists (bring your own boat). They just ask that prospective volunteers make themselves known in advance so they can lay on enough free car parking, equipment and cakes to go round.
