A mass volunteer conservation event takes place in Borrowdale next week, and they're still looking for helping hands.

Run by Friends of the Lake District's Flora of the Fells project, the first Fell Care Day of 2013 is being held in Borrowdale on Thursday 17 October.

Last year more than 350 people took part in two Fell Care Days, at Ullswater and Windermere, and previous events have also been run on Helvellyn and in Ennerdale.

Organiser and Flora of the Fells project officer Sue Manson said:

‘Last year’s Fell Care Days were described as ‘a conservation Glastonbury’ and the atmosphere among the willing volunteers was fantastic – but we can’t do this vital work without you, so please sign up now to take part. There's a range of tasks to suit most levels of fitness, good company and lots of tea and cake at the end of the day!’

Volunteers can choose from a range of activities including: pathworks on the high fells at Dale Head, Dock Tarn and Castle Crag with Fix the Fells teams; coppicing native woodland; dry stone walling at Watendlath; lower level path repair work at New Bridge, Rosthwaite; rhododendron cutting and burning; bird and bat box making; and a fun-sounding canoe-based litter pick.

Groups and organisations taking part include volunteers and staff from Friends of the Lake District, the National Trust, the Lake District National Park Authority, Fix the Fells, Natural England, and the National Park Fell Futures apprentices, among others. Kids from local schools will also be helping with coppicing, path works and learning about rivers and woods.

A second Fell Care Day takes place in woodlands at Grange over Sands on Wednesday 13 November, in partnership with the Morecambe Bay Limestone and Wetlands Nature Improvement Area Project.
