Later this month Marie Curie Cancer Care are staging a charity fundraising walk on Dartmoor. They're hoping for around 200 participants.

Now in its seventh year, the annual Dartmoor Mountain Challenge takes place Sunday 13 October. This year's route is a 13-mile circular from Widecombe in the Moor. The walk is at times challenging, say organisers, with a few steep inclines, particularly from Widecombe to Hamel Down (532 m). It takes in marshland (but of course), woodland and open moors, and includes well-known tors like Hound Tor, Smallacombe Rocks and Bonehill Rocks.

It's a self-guided route, but marshalled at a series of manned checkpoints; so no one should get lost for long.

Sue Cousins, a fundraiser for Marie Curie Cancer Care took part in the challenge herself and now volunteers on the day.

'Marie Curie Nurses cared for my husband, Joe, during the last three weeks of his life and the most important thing for us both was that he was at home where he wished to be' she said. 

'A few months after Joe died I was looking for a way to raise money for Marie Curie and came upon the Dartmoor Challenge. The following October I set off with two friends to walk the Moor. The weather could have been better – but this is Dartmoor; the weather can be unpredictable - that’s all part of the challenge!  Finishing the walk was very satisfying knowing that we had raised money to provide nursing care for more patients like Joe. Even more enjoyable was the reward of a Devon cream tea at a local cafe. Over the years I’ve met an amazing group of people going the extra mile for Marie Curie Cancer Care!'

Registration is £15, and each walker is asked to try to raise £100 through sponsorship. Every £20 raised will provide one hour of nursing care. The minimum age for walkers is 14 years, and under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Dogs are welcome, if kept properly under control.
