With spring finally in the air, daily reports from the Sportscotland Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) ended for the season yesterday.

Weekend reports will still be issued for all five forecast areas, starting Friday 19th April 2013. These will go on for as long as weather and snowpack conditions require.

But the lack of a forecast shouldn't be seen as a guarantee of low risk. During report-free week days SAIS still suggest this stock advice:

'Avalanche hazard considerations should always be part of any winter hill goers daily plans and we would recommend that climbers, walkers and off-piste skiers currently venturing into the hills, continue to note snow and weather conditions in respect of any potential avalanche hazard. Be prepared to modify your plans accordingly.'

Am I the only one thinking it should have been extended this year, especially for The Ben (red spots high up on some slopes in the last forecast)?

Last week in good conditions the number of midweek winter climbers was tiny, can't see that changing this week!

Agreed on week days its a very quiet place now, the rain over the last couple of days will begin the change to 'summer' conditions. Only the weekends are likely to see anything like popularity.
