This year is the 40th anniversary of the South West Coast Path Association, and to mark the milestone a series of 56 sponsored walks is being held to link the whole 630-mile trail, Britain's longest.

The Great South West Walk takes place 3 April - 7 May, and places are still available. With stages ranging from 3-8 miles there's the option of a half day or full day walk, and it's even possible to combine a number of stages over several days. Local guides and path rangers will lead each stage. The relay starts from Poole in Dorset at the southern end of the trail on 3 April and from Minehead in the north on 16 April. It will then work westwards along the north and south coasts simultaneously to meet at Land's End on 7 May for a birthday do.

The aim is to raise at least £250,000 through individual sponsorship, grants, corporate sponsorship and matched giving. This will be used to fund over 50 improvement projects spread along the route - which has recently been affected by an unprecedented number of cliff falls and landslips during an unusually wet winter (see UKH here).

Organisers are hoping that each participant will be able to raise about £50 in sponsorship. If you have a preference, you can say which project you want your money to go towards (providing it goes ahead and is not already funded). To cover the costs of the transport, insurance and a souvenir anniversary T-shirt there's a £10 registration fee for each walk section.
