Lowe Alpine Sponsor Great Lakeland 3Day

Kendal-based Lowe Alpine have signed up to support this year's Great Lakeland 3Day (GL3D), an event for both runners and walkers which takes place in May.

This small but adventurous three-day mountain marathon has a relaxed friendly atmosphere, and attracts both runners and long-distance walkers. The event has taken place most years in the Lake District since 1998 and has built up a dedicated following among those who enjoy the challenge of three long, consecutive days in the hills.

'We are delighted to lend our support to the GL3D' says Rin Colombi, Lowe Alpine Marketing Manager.

'It's an event which embodies endurance and great camaraderie, in the spectacular setting of our own back yard: the Lake District. I think the event is going to grow into something a bit special and we want to get right behind it.'

The event has a reputation for its emphasis on long mountain journeys in spectacular scenery, rather than for complex navigation. Competitors should expect mountain trails and footpaths, along ridges and through valleys, rather than contouring and bogs. Each morning participants simply pack up their kit (which is then transported for them to the next overnight camp) and set off when they like. The faster competitors usually start last, whilst the slower competitors start earlier. Tea, cakes and beer are provided for free at the end of each day and hot water is available both mornings and evenings.

Race Director Shane Ohly says:

'The support from Lowe Alpine is fantastic news for the GL3D and the timing couldn't be better as we launch the film about the 2012 event'. See here:

Shane continues:

'We are also very excited to reveal details of the 2013 GL3D. This year's courses cover a wide-ranging area within the Central and Northern Lakeland fells. Each of our three courses mixes classic summits, valleys and ridges with hidden gems and rarely visited tops in stunning combinations that will provide a compelling weekend of mountain adventure. Our Event Centre is at Dowthwaite Head Farm, which is at the end of beautiful and remote Lake District valley that has no through access and limited parking, and so it remains rarely visited and off the radar of most visitors. It all promises to be another quintessential Cumbrian experience for all involved'.
