Slitt Wood: a North Pennine Valley will be a 6.5 mile journey through 320 million years of geological time exploring how the rocks of Weardale were formed and the way they make the valley look the way it is today. Local geologist Brian Young will explain how the rocks influence the valley's wildlife and talk about the mineral treasures that have been dug from within them. Sunday 5 August 10.30am - 4pm.

Romans Across the Hills is a three-mile exploration of the extraordinary archaeological landscape around Epiacum (Whitley Castle) Roman fort near Alston, Cumbria. The North Pennines AONB Partnership's archaeologist, Paul Frodsham and Dave Went of English Heritage will talk about the work going on at the fort and how people can join with archaeological research in the area. Sunday 19 August 2pm-6pm.

Both these walks are moderate grade, say the AONB, typical country walks with some hills, stiles and muddy paths. Boots are advisable. The cost is £3 per person and booking is essential.

To book these or find out about other walks and events visit the AONB website (click Events in the sidebar), or call the AONB Partnership office on 01388 528801.
