Visitors to Lochaber with Android/Google phones or tablets can make use of the new Glen Nevis App on Google Play, which contains local information, points of interest and details of eight walks in the glen.

Over fifty points of interest are detailed with photography, descriptions, quick facts and Gaelic audio. Points of interest (POI) are marked for each walk so you can follow a walk or explore on your own, and GPS alerts can be enabled allowing notifications of nearby POI. Quality Harvey mapping complements each walk and gives a Glen overview, while high quality pics from local photographers are also included. Additionally users can take their own photos with the app to be compiled into the Nevis Memories area.

For new visitors pre-visit info and sustainability sections are included. Directions, travel information and useful contacts are detailed, while the sustainability section explains the unique pressures on the local area and what visitors can do to minimise their impact.

Your first two walks are free, with an in app payment of 99p unlocking a further six walks with more points of interest. An HD version with higher quality images and all the walks is also available for 99p.

The app was created by local walker Anna Trafford and Edinburgh App developer David Redpath for Friends of Nevis (FON), a community based conservation charity which aims to preserve, protect and support Ben Nevis and the surrounding landscape. All proceeds go to FON.

'For Anna and I it became an obsession to get all the functionality and information we liked and wanted from a modern smartphone app' explains David.

'I first started climbing on the Polldubh crags so the areas always been special to me. The Glen has a great quality of pulling you in amoungst the high mountains into a stunning alpine environment, all with easy access so you can have as big an adventure as you are capable of.'
