The fifth annual Oggie 8 Challenge takes place on Saturday 11 August. There are still plenty of places left for this popular hillwalking event.

The Challenge is a circuit of the eight 3000-foot peaks surrounding Snowdonia's Ogwen Valley - Yr Elen , Carnedd Llewelyn , Carnedd Dafydd , pen yr ole wen, Y Garn , Glyder Fawr , Glyder Fach and Tryfan . The 15-mile route takes in well over 2000m ascent, but involves no obligatory scrambling.

It's put on as a fundraiser for the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO), one of the busiest mountain rescue teams in the country with over 100 callouts per year.

'OVMRO are the MRT that covers the Carneddau and part of the Glyders' says Oggie 8 organiser Russ Hore. 'We are all volunteers and rely on donations to fund our work. The Oggie 8 Challenge takes in eight of the most beautiful peaks in our area and raises much needed funds for the team.'

Around 100 walkers are expected to take part in teams of 4-6 people, with every participant asked to raise at least £25 in sponsorship (or more if you like). The less fleet-footed might take upwards of 12 hours to complete the course, while faster teams may halve that. Although organisers are keen to stress that this is not a race and that it's the taking part that counts, team C'est La Vie have been the ones to beat in recent years with a record time of 5hrs40 in 2011.
