A890 Closed

The A890 between Kyle of Lochalsh and Lochcarron remains closed in both directions following two major rockfalls.

The affected area is a narrow stretch of road at Stromeferry that runs along a steep craggy hillside known for rockfall. It has already been protected in places by wire netting and an avalanche shelter. A rockfall of over 100 tonnes covered the road before Christmas, and just as that had been cleared up a second landslide occurred on December 30. Highland Council now say the road will remain closed indefinitely while further work is carried out, and motorists are advised to use an alternative route. Easier said than done.

The train service is unaffected but people driving between Kyle of Lochalsh and Lochcarron currently have to make a huge detour of around 150 miles. That's something to think about for any hillwalkers and climbers hoping to visit both Kintail/Skye and Torridon/Applecross on the same trip. Local residents will probably have been thinking about it for some time already.
