'With 30 new guidebooks a year, and nearly 300 books in print, it's interesting to take a look back at some of the early guidebooks' says Cicerone's Sarah Spencer.

'We're trying to compile a library of every Cicerone book published, and I'm constantly ferreting around in second hand bookshops looking for old copies.'

'I struck lucky this weekend, and come across two first editions – Walks and Climbs in the Pyrenees, and Winter Climbs North Wales.'

First published in 1978, Walks and Climbs in the Pyrenees written by Kev Reynolds is still in print five editions later, proving the old adage if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Cicerone was founded in 1967 when Walt Unsworth and Brian Evans, in frustration at the lack of suitable guides to areas of the Lake District, came together to produce a climbing guide. The company was subsequently the first to produce guides to winter climbing, via ferrata and scrambling.

If you have any early Cicerone guidebooks gathering dust on your shelves they'd love to hear from you (contact details on their website).
