In search of funds for a new Landrover Glossop Mountain Rescue Team has managed to rope in a big name in the music biz.

Saxophonist Snake Davis and his innovative line-up SnakeStrings will play a charity fundraiser concert, with all proceeds going to the team.

'The concert was launched when the Team learned that one of our two Landrovers would have to be scrapped within a year due to its age and poor condition. Its 20-year service in mountain rescue included a brief moment of national fame when it served as a makeshift delivery suite to a local woman in the snows of January 2010' explains team member and concert organiser Gary Cook.

'Having looked into the cost of replacing the vehicle with a new Landrover custom converted to an ambulance suitable for use on local rough moorland, we were faced with the prospect of raising at least £45,000 in a relatively short space of time. So naturally we were delighted when Snake Davis, one of the finest saxophonists around, agreed to come and play to help our fundraising effort.'

But events then took an unexpected turn. In April Landrover 'gave' royal couple William and Kate a new Mountain Rescue Landrover as a wedding present; Mountain Rescue England and Wales organised a draw for the vehicle, with Patterdale MRT first out of the hat. Patterdale in turn held a lucky draw for one of their old Landrovers and Glossop Team were the winners.

'Notwithstanding our good fortune, we still have another ageing Landrover and having had several months of concern about how we might run if we went down to one vehicle, we have decided we must maintain sufficient funds to be in a position to replace our older vehicle should/when the need arises' says Gary. 'We also face continuous costs to replace damaged or obsolete equipment, acquire new equipment which allows us to do our job more efficiently and effectively and to kit out new members.'

Like all teams in England and Wales, Glossop Team is entirely funded by charitable donations and members have to devote considerable time to fundraising on top of the time they give to carry out rescues. 'Not everyone realises we are all volunteers who do not even claim petrol money when we are called out to rescues' Gary points out.

SnakeStrings perform a mix of soul, classical, jazz, funk and world music. Snake Davis is widely known for his solos on tracks by Lisa Stansfield, M-People and Take That. He has played and recorded with artists ranging from Ray Charles to Paul McCartney, The Eurythmics to Amy Winehouse. Described by The Telegraph as a virtuoso, his music is powerful, moving, and a delight to the senses. The Strings are also versatile, playing with the Pet Shop Boys and orchestras such as the Halle.
