Approximately 700 walkers took part in the Caledonian Challenge at the weekend, an annual team event staged along 54 miles of the West Highland Way. Most participants completed the course in under 24 hours.

'The event was amazing' says Keith McCraw of event orgasnisers SCF (Events) Ltd. 'The weather stayed absolutely perfect for the duration of the challenge and we couldn't have hoped for better. [Participants] took off from Gairlochy following the Caledonian Canal where they made their way to the first checkpoint at Glen Nevis where their support crews met them to give them a hearty breakfast. They then left Glen Nevis making for Kinlochleven with Ben Nevis crystal clear in the background. After they left the Kinlochleven checkpoint they made their way up the Devils Staircase and on to the next checkpoint at Glencoe. When they leave Glencoe they headed off into the night time section and made their way to Inveroran where they get a choice of hot meals and a chance to prepare themselves for the final stretch. When they got down to the finish at Strathfillan, the sun had already begun to rise.'

So far this year's participants have raised over £300,000 for worthy causes, which will be distributed by the Scottish Community Foundation.

'Everyone who took part has been so enthusiastic about their participation and we are hoping that we can get 1,000 walkers for next years event' says McCraw. 'All the staff at SCF Events would like to thank the participants and their support crews for making the day one of the most memorable Caledonian Challenges to date.'
