Both courses could be done on successive days to make a full weekend of it.

Navigation course, Sat 11 June, Cairngorm Mountain.

The course aims to introduce or refresh essential navigation skills, giving a gentle introduction to the theory followed by a practical session on the hill.

  • Increase your confidence in finding your way on the hill
  • Learn the skills of map reading and compass bearings
  • Pick up handy hints and techniques to locate yourself on the hill in poor visibility

You will need to be equipped for a day out on the hill with food and drink, boots, gaiters, waterproof jacket and overtrousers, warm hat and gloves or mitts and a map case or clear poly bag. Maps and compasses will be provided. Ratios are 1:6 and there are spaces for 12 people per course (the minimum age is 18 years); non-members welcome.

GPS course, Sun 12 June, Cairngorm Mountain

The focus of the course is to familiarise participants with the various functions of the GPS unit so they feel confident to navigate safely on the hill.

The one day course will begin with a short (approx 1 hour) introduction session indoors for participants to familiarise themselves with the GPS units. This will be followed by practical sessions around the rescue base and later out on the hill; as with the navigation course participants should come suitably dressed and equipped for a day on the hill.

Cost for each course is £35 (member) £45 (non-member); pre-booking essential. Call 01738 493942 for more.
