A call has gone out this week for a small group of volunteers to assist with securing the future of a major Lake District landscape management project which is helping to protect the National Park from the impact of its own popularity.

The six volunteers are needed to help raise awareness and money for the well known Fix the Fells conservation scheme. Fix the Fells Volunteer Co-ordinator Tim Duckmanton said this was an ideal opportunity for anyone with spare time to put something back into a genuine community voluntary project that benefits both visitors and local residents.

'We're looking for people who are enthusiastic and passionate about the Lake District and who can offer a regular commitment of a day a week. In return we'll give them training, a sense of achievement and a whole load of fun.'

Fix the Fells is a five year project run in partnership between the National Park Authority, National Trust, Natural England, Friends of the Lake District and Nurture Lakeland that aims to repair the erosion of well used upland footpaths and to increase awareness of the problems and solutions. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as donations from supporters and partners.

Would-be applicants, who have until the end of March to apply, will need to have good communication skills, enthusiasm, passion for the uplands and basic IT skills.

Anyone interested in applying should contact Tim on 01539 792674 or tim.duckmanton@lakedistrict.gov.uk
