90% of the text is now with the editors for the next edition of the Scottish Mountaineering Club Skye guidebook. There have been about a thousand new routes added since the last edition in 1996. Miles of the dramatic coastline has been developed. The lid is taken off the vast potential for mixed winter routes and the Cuillin ridges and rounds are all dealt with as routes in their own right. Colour photodiagrams show incredible detail on the huge faces like Sron na Ciche and should make exploration a lot easier. The emphasis is on using the book to seek dry rock on this very large island rather than expecting the mountains to be clear every day.

To further enhance the quality of the book UKC has kindly agreed to host a competition for ACTION photos taken on Skye. The selection process will begin in the next few weeks but this still leaves time to get pictures, especially if the current good weather holds.

Also of interest would be any historical action shots with black and white welcome. There must be some absolute gems hidden in collections of slides and prints as well as from this digital era.

Type of shots required: Primarily shots of summer or winter climbs on the Island are needed. There is a shortage of photos of Cuillin climbs as opposed to views. Particularly sought are photos capturing the scale and magnificence of the surroundings as well as having climbers in good positions (see attached picture- FA Crib Route, VS 4c TD Gap). Scrambling photos would need to be exceptional as would any shots of the In Pinn or Cioch.

Please post entries on the UKC competition page (The closing date is 1st June.)

Prizes: Photographs used will be paid at £25 each or £50 for a front cover shot. Four copies of the book will be given to the best UKC entries as voted on by users of the site, whether they are used or not.

Thanks alan, could you put it into the in the premier post too please? guess it's the weird looking gallery in the photos page just now? Initial lack of action is not a suprise. Always thought that getting folk to pose them this spring would be the best chance for real quality. fingers x'd for a storming month. cheers for now, Mike
