Karrimor, Field & Trek, Now Nevisport For SPORTS Direct

SPORTS Direct, the acquisitive and recently floated retailer, has acquired the struggling Fort William-based outdoor retailer Nevisport, according to weekend reports. The move is being seen as a further sign that consolidation in the sportswear industry continues apace.

Sports Direct, which owns the Lillywhites chain, and is run by the retail entrepreneur Mike Ashley, has become the dominant force in the sector by snapping up independents such as Gilesports and Hargreaves. In July, it added a 60 per cent stake in English outdoor clothing chain Field & Trek. The outlets provide routes to market for Sports Direct's 30 brands, which include rucksack label Karrimor.

Sources close to the situation have said that Nevisport changed hands this week, though neither party was available to confirm the new ownership at the weekend.

Welcome to the world of outdoor expertise governed by accountants. Something I always knew was on the horizon. It takes a certain type of person to battle away, trying to give people the best advise you can based on your own knowledge and training, with little monetary reward. Just the complete confidence that you are morally doing the right thing. My regards to everyone who still stands their ground. Trist

same people as run 'sports world' I believe? (I think they're related to Lilliwhites). I may buy a thermal vest from them, but wouldn't buy any other hill kit there!

Seeing that Mike Ashley owns Newcaste United as well, and can be seen wearing the colours at every home game, how long will it be before mountain jackets and sacks are sporting the famous black and white stripes?
