WINNER: Jeff moir

Hot on the heels of Mountain Equipment's Tupilak Pack launch comes the result of another extensive R&D project, their new Aerostat Sleeping Mat range.

Normally a mat reliant solely on pressurised chambers of air to provide support and cushioning would be notoriously cold due to the amount of convection which occurs within but, by combining a patented construction process with our own exclusive insulation technology, our Aerostat Mats have been able to overcome this, creating for their weight, the warmest range of insulated mats available.

Sharing a construction method patented by Exped® but with insulation optimisation technology designed and developed in-house by Mountain Equipment, our two Aerostat Mats are amongst the very warmest sleeping mats available. One is filled with POLARLOFT® insulation, the warmest synthetic insulation available in wet conditions; the other with DOWN CODEX® approved down for the greatest thermal resistance in dry conditions.

The Aerostat Down 7.0 Mat features our unique Helix internal baffle construction. Consisting of a continuous piece of stripping bonded into each baffle of the mat and twisted so as to provide maximum air and down resistance, it reduces convection inside the mat and serves as an anchor point for the down. The result is reduced down movement, minimised cold spots and a class leading R value of 8.8.

Both mats are easily inflated with our new Windsock™. A design which offers rapid, easy and reliable inflation without the need for heavy or gimmicky accessories. Built into the mat's stuff sack it works equally well whether in the thin air of the Himalaya or valley camping in the Alps.

  • Aerostat Down 7.0 Specification
  • 120 g of 90-10 Pure Duck Down with a minimum fill power of 700
  • Vertically aligned baffles with Helix technology to reduce down migration
  • 30D ripstop nylon with TPU lamination
  • 2-way self-sealing Gas Mask valve for inflation and deflation
  • Supplied Windsock™ inflates mat easily and doubles as lightweight stuff sack
  • R value 8.8
  • Weight: 580g/20oz

Looks like a great product, especially when looking at the weight to r-value, thats a big insulator. I used to use an Exped downmat and it was rubbish. Holding the thing up to the sunlight reveals the down didn't spread evenly but left uninsulated areas where the down had slid into clumps. The info claims to have fixed this problem somehow so it could be a great product.

Is there a reason this mat is square rather than mummy shaped?
