Frank Booth

Borrowing from the 1970 theme of governmental advise for nuclear protection, "PROTECT & SURVIVE" the concept has updated and applied (in these instances) to Petzl ice climbing products. The concept could be used any number of Lyon products.

Visually, the design strikes a balance between the coarse, grainy backgrounds with the stylish studio shots, and the corporate colours (orange, black) are used to emphasise the brand.

Finally, a call to action is included to encourage user participation.

Paul Cornthwaite of Lyon Equipment:

frank/paul4
"Frank said what he was going to do and executed it perfectly. Strong imagery and text, good product photos, kept the corporate look, continuity between graphic adverts, good contrast between textures. Sent a very clear message about the products and brand. Each element of each ad was pleasingly organised and merged together. The circles focussed the eye on the product and messages, and sometimes away from them. This cleverly means that you scan the whole advert but focus on the important message. Included a call to action ' >>more'."

Tom Everett

A few words about myself: I'm a student at Sheffield University, studying Russian. When I'm not busy climbing or studying, I like to design stuff on photoshop and bake bread. Having been given the opportunity to design four banners, I have decided to try out a few different styles, from gritty and industrial to sleek and modern.

Frank Bennett of Lyon Equipment:

frank/paul3 "Tom chose four different styles in his four adverts and managed to pull it all off - and used his multitude of image manipulation skills in the process to great effect. We particularly like the illustrations of the climber and rope, the rope artfully filling the whole frame, in the tower advert. Beautifully done. Similarly in the Myo XP advert, great illustrations of the product in use combined with a product photograph. Great use of text, readable, in proportion, and good contrast, complementary without any clashes. Liked the shadow in the Elios advert that highlights both product and action photograph. The Miura VS advert is very attention grabbing, it's an aggressive rock shoe!"

JOINT SECOND PRIZE

Stephen Lavallee

Just started climbing again after about 15 years 'off'. Discovering little places all around the state of Vermont (USA), and bouldering when I get the chance.

Frank Bennett of Lyon Equipment:

frank/paul2 "The Miura tower really caught our attention. Simple, but great positioning of the rope and climbers body to form a triangle. Great image choice, very eye catching in a peaceful way.

The Sportiva 'layer cake' advert was well executed and showed the whole Sportiva range in context. The Sportiva Solution box advert we found very attractive.

Great use of colour throughout and very well thought out design."

EXTRA PRIZE

Beal Tiger Rope

Jonathan Bean

I'm a 25 year old living in Glasgow. I climb whenever I get the chance. Been working a graphic designer for a online marketing agency for just over a year now so it was really cool to design some banners for some climbing brands. Just wish I'd found this comp before today, 31st May, had to rush them a bit.

Paul Cornthwaite of Lyon Equipment:

frank/paul1 We added an extra prize for Jonathan. His entries would work well both on the internet and in print. They have a classic feel, good spacing, nice grayed out informative text that doesn't scream at you, very strong well-positioned images. Ticked most of the boxes and overall a good collection. The Beal advert was particulary good showing the range, a great image and we liked the line, "It's comforting being attached to an old friend." A great reassuring description for a rope advert.
