Greg's Hut, the remote bothy on the flanks of Cross Fell, has been reopened for use following a major refurbishment, in part funded through a public appeal.

Sited in one of the highest and most exposed spots in the Pennines, this handy stop-off on the Pennine Way had been suffering from years of hard weather, and the roof was in urgent need of a major revamp. This required the use of specialist contractors, with the material being flown in by helicopter - not a cheap job. An appeal was announced earlier this year to help meet the £100k cost of the work.

The roof has now been replaced in its original form using traditional Cumbrian heavyweight stone slabs, and the porch has been rebuilt with new foundations. Improvements have also been made to the interior. The final phase of the work, finishing the external and internal walls with lime mortar, will be undertaken in the spring when temperatures allow.

"We would like to thank all of our volunteers who have assisted with the work, together with the contractors, Hymers Construction Ltd of Garrigill" said the Mountain Bothies Association (MBA).

"Their efforts have transformed the Hut from a cold, wet and sometimes ice cave into a weathertight and comfortable mountain refuge for those who wish shelter. We would also like to thank those who provided grant funding and those who responded to our Reroofing Appeal."

Greg's Hut was built in the 19th Century to house miners from a nearby lead mine, and was renovated in 1968 as an open shelter in memory of local climber John Gregory who died in a mountaineering accident. The bothy is maintained jointly by the MBA and the Greg's Hut Association.
