Stephen Venables - Everest's East Side StoryVideo

© Alpine Club

Late last year as part of the centenary of the first Everest expedition, Stephen Venables gave a lecture to the Alpine Club entitled 'Everest: East Side Story.' Intertwined with his own personal story on Everest, Stephen tells the wider story of the world's highest mountain, with a particular focus on the early 1920s expeditions.

As the first Briton to climb Everest without the use of supplemental Oxygen and as a student of mountaineering history, Stephen is uniquely placed to reflect on the climbing world's relationship with the mountain after 100 years of exploration on its slopes. Packed with personal anecdotes, historical curiosities and some of Stephen's fantastic photography, the lecture is informing, educating and entertaining in equal measure.

One of the most engaging lectures on the subject I have ever seen. Quite brilliant.
