Lockdown - Free Films from the Hills to Keep You SaneVideo

© Wild Scotland

One week into lockdown and the UKC/UKH staff are starting to climb the walls. We're taking solace in the fact that the hills will be there when we emerge. Meanwhile, there's an abundance of online films to help us plan our next adventure. If you can't get lost in the hills, get lost in this selection of films:

Wild Scotland – Aerial Filming

John Duncan spent months of 2015 travelling up and down the country capturing locations, carefully planning his schedule to take advantage of the best light, be that dawn or dusk.

Run Forever: Nicky Spinks and the Double Bob Graham

UKC & UKH's feature length documentary from a couple of years ago. Nicky Spinks is a beef farmer from Yorkshire and one of the UK's best fell runners. In 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, turning her world upside down. 'Run Forever' looks at Nicky's inspirational life and her record breaking attempt of a double Bob Graham Round in the Lake District; a 132 mile route, with 54,000ft of ascent, that only one person has completed in under 48 hours.

Out In The Sierra

Kalen Thorien, a professional skier, decided to spend her summer on a 270-mile, 18 day, solo high traverse in the Sierra Nevada. A heart-warming look into a solo adventure.

Winter Walking on Quinag

Perhaps it's not the first Scottish destination that springs to mind for a top-notch winter ridge walk, but amateur mountain film maker Murray Wilkie shows why it probably should be. Here's one to dream about for next winter.

Liv Along The Way

Since she first summited Mont Blanc as a teen, Liv Sansoz knew she would make her life in the mountains. She was twice crowned World Champion in sport climbing, and eventually expanded her professional horizons to mixed climbing, ski mountaineering, and base jumping. In 2017, at 40 years old, Liv set out from her base in Chamonix, France to attempt to climb all 82 4000m peaks in the European Alps in a single year. As she's learned several times throughout her life, things don't always go as planned.

Trials of Miles - Running 650+ km of the Australian Alps

Beau Miles laces up for a different kind of world first, running 650+km of the Australian Alpine Walking Track. Traversing through some of the highest peaks in Australia, Beau battles injury, fatigue and ultimately himself in his own personal Trial of Miles. For trail blazers of this new era, running long distance walking trails, passing through wild landscapes quickly, seems to nourish a new kind of physical craving. Not, as is the case for Trials of Miles, without questioning how and why we drag ourselves, and our family, into the endeavour. This film unpacks the physical and mindful nature of being the first to run the Australian Alps walking track.

A Long Day Out with Kilian Jornet

Kilian Jornet sets out on a run around the summits of his Norwegian home. Over 56 hours, Kilian completes 168 kilometres with a vertical gain of 22,000 metres. Goregeous scenery, too!

A Highland Tale

Stunning timelapse sequences from a number of well-known Scottish scenic spots, by photographer Marcel Gallaun.

Only the Essential: Pacific Crest Trail Documentary

A 2668 mile thru-hike on America's premiere long distance footpath, the Pacific Crest Trail.

The Cape Wrath Ultra

Winding through the beautiful lochs, glens and mountains of the Scottish Highlands, the Cape Wrath Ultra is an ultra-running expedition style race based on the classic backpacking adventure, set among some of the world's most inspirational landscapes, including Morar, Knoydart, Kintail, Torridon, Assynt and Sutherland. This film follows the progress of the inaugural race in May 2016, focusing on some of the first ever participants to take on this extraordinary challenge.

The Wild in Me: Dave Cuthbertson, Mountain Climber and Photographer

Renowned climber and photographer Dave 'Cubby' Cuthbertson explores Steall Gorge and the slopes of Ben Nevis as he reflects on a life shaped by the mountains. This is the latest in a series of films by the John Muir Trust, celebrating wildness and the relationships between people and wild places.

Dark Peak Fell Runners

The Dark Peak Fell Runners base themselves in Sheffield, but their playground is the Peak District National Park where they weave tracks through the fields, peat bogs and rocky outcrops to create a tapestry of eccentricity, endeavour and endurance.

This is one of the biggest pure fell running clubs in the UK, and 'Dark Peak Fell Runners' captures the personality, quirks and successes of the club and its members. Shot throughout the course of a year, the film follows in their footsteps to reveal their well-trodden Peak District running routes including the club's flagship race, the Edale Skyline.

Paul Tierney - Running the Wainwrights

In June 2019, ultra-runner Paul Tierney completed a record-breaking round of the 214 Lake District Wainwright peaks. He broke Steve Birkinshaw's 2014 record of 6 days, 13 hours and 1 minute by nearly 7 hours. Prior to that, the record was held by another fell running legend, Joss Naylor, who ran the Wainwrights in 7 days 1 hour and 25 minutes in 1987.

Needing to cover a distance of approximately 318 miles and ascend the equivalent height of four times Mt Everest, Paul knew this was his biggest challenge to date and enlisted the help of friends and family.

The Bothy Project - discovering the wild Shenavall

Why do we need wild places? Four artists head to the remote Scottish bothy of Shenavall in an evocative call to the wilderness.

A Fine Line

A film by Dave MacLeod with Michael Tweedley running the fantastic Tower Ridge and the brilliant mountain paths made by the Nevis Landscape Partnership, Friends of Nevis and the John Muir Trust.

Kungsleden with Emelie Forsberg

In 2018, Emelie Forsberg went back to her homeland to attempt a Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Kungsleden Trail, a world-renowned hiking trail in Swedish Lapland that boasts spectacular wilderness. It is usually completed by hikers in no less than 15 days, but Emelie covered the 450km trail in 4 days and 21 hours, beating the current FKT, held since 2017.
