Film: Snowdonia Winter Safety

© Rob Johnson

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team have asked us to promote this excellent short film on winter safety. Made by local instructor and film maker Rob Johnson, its basic message is to go appropriately prepared.

With snow and ice on the ground even Snowdon's well-trodden easy routes such as the Pyg Track and Llanberis Path can be hazardous for the ill-equipped.

Snowdonia National Park's team of wardens climb Snowdon every day of the winter months to record the ground conditions. This film follows its wardens, shows the spectacular but potentially dicey conditions found in winter, and introduces the equipment necessary to enjoy the mountains safely.

'We don't want to stop people going out and enjoying the mountains' says Rob Johnson, who's also a member of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team.

'The key point is preparation. If there is snow and ice on the ground, [that means] making sure people have the proper kit; ice axe, crampons and the skill to be able to use them.'

Check the forecasts and ground conditions reports, he says, and then pick your gear accordingly.

Even if you know all this the film is worth a watch for the scenery!
