Ecuadoran-Swiss mountain runner Karl Egloff has set a new record for the ascent and descent of Aconcagua in Argentina, beating Spanish endurance athlete Kilian Jornet's two-month old record (UKC News Report) and finishing in under 12 hours for the same route. Egloff's team reported on Facebook that he completed the 22,841ft ascent and descent in 11 hours 52 minutes, shaving almost an hour off Kilian's time of 12 hours and 49 minutes.

Both Egloff and Jornet climbed Aconcagua by the normal route on the south side, starting at the Horcones trailhead and ascending 13,327 vertical feet in about 25 miles to reach the summit.

A time faster than 13 hours 46 minutes had never before been reported for this route until Kilian's record was set in December last year.

Egloff, 33 is no stranger to beating mountain running records and also competes in mountain racing events. In August 2014, he beat Jornet's record for running up and down Kilimanjaro by more than half an hour. Egloff also holds the fastest known time for ascending and descending Cotopaxi, Ecuador's second-highest mountain.

I define myself as a lover of mountains. I like competing, but, above all, I conceive sport as a way to discover landscapes both inside and outside you.

Just to be clear... so this is roughly 50 miles round trip even if you ignore the fact it's up a sodding great mountain... wow.

This says it is 60km, more like 37miles, which sounds a bit more sensible. http://blog.summitsofmylife.com/2014/12/24/aconcagua-kilian-jornets-new-record-in-summits-of-my-life-project/
