'Is the use of map and compass on the hills obsolete?' asks a recent forum thread. Well GPS may have its uses, but here's a strong case for the humble paper map.

It's the first, and arguably still the last, word in navigation technology. A 'bio-optical knowledge recording and dissemination system; an unprecedented technological revolution.'

Only the French. But perhaps they have a point?
