Last Friday night Mountain Rescue teams in the Lake District were called to the assistance of an overdue walker. He was found bootless in the Wythburn Fells after a search of about four hours.

The 74 year old man, who rescuers say had a previous medical history, was walking the Coast to Coast route with a friend. Having had trouble with his footwear he had fallen behind his friend in what rescuers have called 'odd' circumstances, and was reported overdue by his companion late in the evening on 10 August.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team mobilised immediately, and requested assistance from Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team and Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs.

The missing man was found in Wythburn, walking in his socks. He was provided with a pair of boots and assisted down to his accommodation in Grasmere.

Lightweight footwear is all very well, but it's possible to take these things too far.
