New Map of the White Peak

The BMC / Harvey British Mountain Map series continues to grow with the recent addition to the range of a White Peak map.

This is one of England's most popular walking and climbing destinations. In contrast to the moody moorland and dramatic gritstone edges of the Dark Peak in the north of the Peak District, the more southerly White Peak is a limestone landscape of green rolling hills and deep gorge-like dales.

British Mountain Maps, published by Harvey Maps in partnership with the BMC, are designed especially for climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers. These 1:40,000 scale sheets use colour-shaded contours for easy identification of hills and valleys, and are printed on lightweight, tear-resistant and waterproof polyethylene. Only information relevant to outdoor users is included, with none of the extraneous features such as administrative boundaries that can clutter an equivalent OS sheet.

The reverse side of each map contains mountain incident and first aid advice, navigation tips, useful visitor information, and geological information provided by the British Geological Survey. The reverse of the White Peak map also includes 1:40,000 map extensions east to Matlock and north to Edale.

Not everyone finds their 15m contour intervals or colour shading easy to work with, but since their launch British Mountain Maps have certainly won a lot of fans.

'British Mountain Maps are fit for purpose with great cartography, packed with relevant information and include a geological map' says Mark Vallance, founder of Wild Country. 'Imagine a completely waterproof map that is lighter than paper and will remain readable in any conditions ...this is it.'
