Veteran climber Douglas (Dougie) Lang died at the weekend. The 69 year-old Dundonian, former SMC President and long time stalwart of the Scottish scene, was killed while soloing in Coire Fee. It's thought he was caught in an avalanche.
The alarm was raised by his family when his return was overdue on Friday, and a search was initiated by Tayside Police and Mountain Rescue, with the support of a helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth. On Sunday police confirmed the discovery of a body in avalanche debris, though it is yet to be formally identified.
In a long and respected climbing career Dougie Lang made many first ascents including the classic Ardverikie Wall on Binnein Shuas with Graeme Hunter (1967), and the Great Stack of Handa with Hunter and Hamish MacInnes (1969). He was well known and much liked, and his loss is a sad blow for the Scottish climbing community.
