Awards, Awards, Awards

There will be two major awards at this years Kendal Mountain Festivals (website).

First, the Boardman Tasker Prize for mountain literature will be awarded. The prize of £2,000 commemorates the lives of Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker and is given to the author or co-authors of an original work which has made an outstanding contribution to mountain literature. Last years top prize was shared by Andy Cave with Learning to Breathe and Jim Perrin's The Villain: the Life of Don Whillans.

This years short list includes Arlene Blum with Breaking Trail: A Climbing Life, Jimmy Cruickshank's High Endeavours: The Life and Legend of Robin Smith, Charles Lind's book An Afterclap of Fate: Mallory on Everest and Mr. Perrin is shortlisted again with The Climbing Essays and Graham Wilson's A Rope of Writers: a look at mountaineering literature in Britain. You can see the shortlist with a synopsis of each book at the Boardman Tasker website (here) and the full list of entries here.

This years Kendal International Film Competition has attracted a broad selection of entries. We've put a list of this years films that are vying for top honours in the various categories at UKClimbing.com here. Last years winners are listed here

If you fancy learning about digital film making Kendal Festivals still have a few spaces on their EXTREME FILM SCHOOL (details here). It's incredibly good value and there are various courses offered at several skill levels.

Awards, schmawards! Who cares? Et in Art-cadia ego :) Marc C (still not bitter at coming 3rd - aged 8 - in a Twist competition at Abergele; winning a lousy stick of rock, when the winner got a shiny highly desirable torch).

It’s also worth saying that one of our Extreme Film School entries is being screened as a finalist in Banff this year -Thrill Seekers. Two other ESF film makers from 2005 have re-edited and extended their two-minute films from 2005 and are in the finals at Kendal - The Beatnik and Generation Game. And of course other ESF film makers from previous years are now active commercially - people like Alastair Lee and David Halstead of Posing Productions for example. Clive, Kendal Film Festivals
