Parlick Pike, Fairsnape Fell and Wolf Fell Walking

Parlick rises gracefully over the Ribble plain in a broad grassy cone riven by gullies, after the form of Lose Hill in the Peak. The sudden upthrust from level ground has three immediate benefits: the terrain is well-drained, the long-range views are superb (North Wales is likely, The Wrekin possible) and it’s very popular with aeronauts (mixed flocks of parapentists, gliders and hang-gliders wheel overhead on most days). Parlick forms the backdrop to the lives of Prestonians, so is more popular than many of the local heights. That companionable feel, the dry turf and the busy skies make this a lighter-hearted outing than can be found in the darker heart of Bowland.

Detailed description

1
SD6015944219 Park at the foot of Fell Gate. Walk up the road to the homestead of Fell Foot.

2
SD5990244514 Go through the gate and set off up the fellside. There are many routes branching and reconverging, but the best and strongest line strikes a bold diagonal slant leftwards.

3
SD5949844691 When you've sufficiently zigged, zag right, up to the summit of Parlick.

4
SD5958045022 Follow the obvious ridgeline north, not losing too much height before it rises and swings northwest to Fairsnape Fell.

5
SD5911546794 Head west-northwest to a junction of fences beyond a heart shaped pool.

6
SD5944446974 Follow a good stony track, northwest bound, to the left of the fence.

7
SD5972047151 Turn right just before another junction of fences.

8
SD6085247050 Go through a wooden kissing gate and bear slightly right on peaty terrain. The map shows an interwoven tangle of tracks descending south but there's one really clear line, to the right of the ridge, leading down to Saddle End Farm. Go straight through the farmyard and down a steep textured concrete farm road.

9
SD6142545063 Not obvious. At the powerlines, turn sharply right, doubling back over a stile. Follow the fence line at the top of a narrow wood. With Wolfen Hall farm and the power lines as your guide, keep heading west-southwest, including a drop into a jungly ravine.

10
SD6054444614 After bypassing the farm, you'll converge with a tarmac access road at a cattle grid. This road will lead you back to your starting point.
