Säntis is the 13th most topographically prominent peak in the Alps with accordingly expanisve views, and is the highest peak of the Alpstein area. The summit is topped by a large telecommunications tower and is served by a cable car from the north, while a mountain hut is also part of the summit complex.
There are several different approaches to the summit for the walker, each involving some degree of engineered paths with steps and cables, mainly near the top, some routes also having permanent snow fields.
An ascent from the northeast starting from Wasserauen (868m) via the Seealpsee and Meglisalp is perhaps the most picturesque, also one of the technically easiest. Given the large height gain, the mountain hut at the Rotsteinpass (2119m) is a further option to break up the journey, the engineered path on the Lisengrat connecting the hut to Säntis. The ascent from Schwägalp (1352m) on the north side, also the departure point for the cable car, is correspondingly shorter.
