Hill features

Mount Merapi (Fire Mountain) is the most active volcano in Indonesia. The summit is at 2913m, and gives good views across Central Java.

Approach notes

It is best to start the climb from the villages of Selo or Kaliurang in the early hours of the morning to see the glowing lava before dawn. The top section is steep and loose, and needs some care.
