Matt Stevens 1 Feb, 2019 2nd O/S With no neve at all and only powder this was very difficult indeed - started from the CIC hut at 7.30am and summited at 11.30pm!! Having done Tower Ridge in 5 hours with good neve last year we had expected it to take maybe 8 hours, not 16Hrs! With hindsight we should have backed off after maybe 4 pitches but the climb did not get any easier. Back to the NF car park at 4am after the long walk back down. All’s well that ends well - but do not underestimate this extremely challenging route.

alexm198 31 Mar, 2018 AltLd O/S Third ridge of the day. Lost a little bit of time here as we were careless coming off the summit after NE buttress -- was too lazy to take a bearing down into Coire Leis and lost 15 mins or so wondering left and right trying to find our footsteps from earlier in the day. Got to the bottom of Observatory Ridge just before 11am. Got the rope out, had a brew etc. Matt led off at 11:17, but it was slow going. The route is in poor condition, lots of detached placage on compact slabs. Not entirely sure we followed the route correctly in the middle section. We ended up below a bulging arete with a peg but it was completely black and rounded and looked relatively desperate so I traversed hard right and managed to eventually weave a path through very thin snow covered slabs and up a chimney (tech 6, hence thinking we were off-route). Some easier terrain led to a very stiff section up a leaning groove and over a lip (in situ wire belonging to one Rob Powell of SWMC which I helpfully kicked out as I led over the lip). This was also tech 6, but short lived. Spicy section of a cheval snow ridge after this, with great views over the Orion face. Long section of gut-busting slog up the top section of Zero Gully which Matt plowed up like some insane, unstoppable half-man half-tractor. Topped out just after 3pm feeling pretty spent and having burnt through a lot of time on this one.

Just Will 18 Mar, 2016 AltLd O/S Glorious rounded slab fest with an 'adventurous' absence of pro. Climbed in perfect weather and (mercifully) fairly 'alpine' conditions - consolidated snow on ledges, but the slabs largely free of snow/rime. Some sections of ice in deep cracks, which were easy enough to clear away to place limited gear - although protection generally seemed very sparse, and that wasn't for lack of searching... I imagine the route would quickly become a Type-3 fun bonanza if buried under heaps of unconsolidated powder. Started mid-afternoon and simuled most of the route (including the crux... by accident) over a few hours before soaking up the sunset and mega cloud inversions from the top of the Ben. Nice to tick all the Ben ridges in winter.

Mike Doodle 10 Feb, 2016 AltLd dnf Abbed off after most difficulties. Despite knowing it would be "very awkward under powder" [SMC guide], we thought we'd have a play anyway. First 2 pitches had some tricky mixed (J did a hard traverse/mantel on P1; I had some interesting corners on P2 that felt sustained tech 5). We continued up to the snowy col at half-height but, despite having done 90% of difficulties, we decided to ab off rather than finish by headtorch as was already 3pm. One 60m ab into Observatory Gully.

masa-alpin H 20 Jan, 2014 AltLd O/S Combination of pitched-climb and moving together. Due to powder, not much ice, unfrozen turf under a foot or more of snow high up on the route, climb was hard, gear was worse. We placed 15-ish gear in the entire route, including the (often poor) belays. Rob lead p1 (100m), P3, P5, P7 (100m), I lead P2 (10m; probable crux - above poor belay with no runner), P4 (80m), P6 (one tech-6 move). It took 7 hours for us to complete the route, back in the CIC just in daylight.

allmag ? Feb, 1985 2nd My first winter route of any note. Ironic since it required the full gamut of rock climbing moves - layback, jamming, mantles and rock-overs. Got off route at one point ending up in an steep ice gully on the West side - rope jammed round blind corner, Colin not amused! Great route.
