Brünnelistock from the west © rlrs

Hill features

The Brünnelistock is characterised by its long summit ridge and is an excellent viewpoint to the surrounding mountains.  The south west part of the ridge is an exposed, low angle grassy path with several scrambly sections and steps to be negotiated, on mainly reasonable rock.  This part can be ascended from the col pt.1989m, easily reached from the Wägital on the western side, and takes in most of the ridge and difficulties. However, the traverse in the other direction from the north-east is likely the better option, having slightly steeper sections and some nice situations. Some climbs have also been done on the north west wall, and the ascent from the eastern Oberseetal appears to be a demanding T6 on the SAC wanderskala (see e.g. the hikr.org website).

Approach notes

The easiest approach is from the Wägital to the west of the peak, where there are several parking areas at the side of the road around pt.931m from where the main path departs.  From the cow farmers hut at Hohfläschenmatt pt.1687m there is an unmarked, sometimes faint path that heads roughly east up a shallow gully, out of the filthy quagmire (if it's been raining at all), that leads to the col pt.1989m.

However, it is quicker to leave the main path earlier at 1650m where it turns from east to north and continue east, picking a way through the jumbled landscape, to find the path to the col around the 1690m contour.  If going to the north east end of the ridge there is no further path: one may continue on the path to the col at first, then leave it at some point to traverse the boulder / scree slopes below the north west face of the mountain. Perhaps better is to leave it whilst still in the grassy part of the landscape, and head directly to the col Mürli, just to the west of the start of the ridge.
