Sabalan is situated in the mountain range of Alborz in the province of Ardebil in Iran. With its 4811m, it is the third highest peak of Iran. The mountain is a sacred place, related to the Zoroastrism.
Volcanic andesire rock in red - ochre colours, easy to scramble up and down. Snow patches until late summer. The summit is snow covered and the Sabalan crater lake is located there.
From the city of Ardebil, drive toward Meshgin Shahr, then enter into the Alvares ski resort valley. Climbing the top is possible in just a day. If not fit enough - the East and the west shelters are situated east and west of the summit top.
The most popular season for climbing Mt. Sabalan is during the summer (June - September), but winter ascents are also often made here.
After crossin the South-West ridge (pass), high mountain plateau opnes and is best place for camping. Here many remains of temporary (summer) settlements are scattered around. Water is available from small lakes/ melting snow or the hot springs from the slopes. Water tablets are reccomended!
