Crag features

This is one of the most dramatic areas in which to climb in West Cornwall. Zawn Duel (the Devil's Zawn) truly deserves the epithet 'awesome' while the West Face of Carn Gloose is equally impressive though more open to the light.

The climbs are on excellent rock that has good friction when dry. The rock is prone to greasiness and is therefore best climbed on in the sun or after long dry periods. Zawn Duel is wet during most of the winter and can be wet in places even in summer.

Approach notes

Take the B3306 St. Ives-Pendeen road to the Gurnard's Head Hotel and park on the verge opposite the hotel. Walk down the lane to the right of the hotel. After approx 200 yards this becomes a private lane which continues down to the beach. Exit leftwards before the gate into the private lane to follow a signed footpath (easy to miss the sign) through what looks like somebody's driveway complete with garage towards the coast, taking the higher, left-hand path where it splits. Follow the path to where it meets the coast path (Gurnard's Head is directly ahead) and turn left. Carn Gloose is the large rocky ridge 500m west. Scramble down the right-hand side of the ridge to a large ledge overlooking the crag and above the routes. Abseil from hereabouts to sea-level ledges. Zawn Duel is the deep gash which lies a short distance to the east of Carn Gloose summit.

Restricted Access

Tidal in Zawn Duel, non-tidal on the W face of Carn Gloose, but beware swells on Astral Stroll!

Seasonal Restrictions
