Freda's Buttress in Tideswell Dale © Alan James - UKC and UKH

Crag features

A pleasant dale which needs more traffic if it is to rise above its current esoteric status. Rock variable and vegetated with routes between 9 and 22m long at all grades. Junction Buttress, Alpha Buttress, The Enclosure and Freda's Buttress are in reasonable condition whilst Buffoon Buttress and Beltonville Buttress have been largely reclaimed by vegetation. Freda's buttress is gaining popularity as a bouldering venue.

Approach notes

The dale starts 1km south of Tideswell alongside the B6049. Approach from either the northern end (Tideswell Dale picnic site and car park) or the southern end at its junction with Miller's Dale (SK 155732).

Great bouldering at Freda's Buttress that remains dry when other places (tor) are wet. Good problems on good rock.

Visited the crag most recently on 30Dec08. The condition of many of the trad routes is surprisingly good, most noteably those on Junction Buttress, Alpha Buttress and Freda's buttress. The rock on the routes is sound but the topouts look horrendous. Buffoon buttress, which claims Tideswell Dale's only 2* route (Old Dog - New Trick) has been almost completely reclaimed by undergrowth. The sport route Culloden (f8a+) has seen chalk recently but the bolt, peg and loweroff look like they may need replacing. All-in-all a pleasant venue but difficult to see it drawing the crowds away from nearby gritstone...
