Chris Stirling on Scared Rabbit Fr7a+ © Michael Ryan

Crag features

Slate quarry with four worthwhile routes, if you're in the area. All fully bolted.

Approach notes

As you leave Chapel Stile (heading down Great Langdale valley) 200m before the boulders you'll go around a sweeping left-hand corner. Park on the right hand side of the road (space for 2 cars), taking care not to block access to the house opposite, access to the green lane behind you or obstruct traffic.

Head up the green lane, through the gate and continue up the gently sloping track for 200m until you reach the quarry. After descending the steps the routes are on your left. Walk to the bottom of the crag, turn around, open your now slack jaw. Yes it is steep.

This access information (especially parking location) is not through formal agreement, so be flexible if approached by a local. Cheers now get cranking!

Bolts on the 6c and lower part of 7c look great. Rest of the bolts and the belay are in a poor state. Lowered off halfway up keep on keeping on left a mallion.

Climbing "Keep on Keeping on" the other day, pulled off the triangular pinch in the middle of the crux section. Although I'm clear not the first to have done that, the hold glued on in two or three sections. unfortunately the hold broke into quite a few more bits and it unlikely you could glue it back. I don't think its changes the grade

Put in 2 new bolts at the belay. Still needs a new chain. Anyone??? Also put a new lower bolt at the start of the 7a+.

2nd bolt on Scared Rabbit is terrible. I can't really understand the logic in replacing the odd one here and there when they're this poor in places. Belay isn't wonderful either.

Oh, and the front of the big jug is wobbly and feels like it could break completely. Could do with a bit of glue before someone heavy pulls it off.

1st bolt on Keep On and 4th on Hello not great. Fun little crag, wish there was more of it.

The spinning bolt which is shared between the 8a and 7a+ has been replaced with a nice shiny new one. (not by me mind, but looks new)

Still not been rebolted! But all bolts appear fine except the 3rd on KeepOnKeepingOn....

If you're feeling fit and want a challenge..... Set up a toprope on 'Hello Helen', climb this, down climb 'Scared Rabbit', (clipping the top two bolts,) to the bottom of 'Keep On Keeping On', climb this to the belay, then down climb 'Scared Rabbit' again, (clipping same bolts,) then back up 'Keep on Keeping On' to the belay. I don't know the grade, but a couple of reps of this after work should get you fit.

Due for re-bolting soon! Thanks to Dan the man at the BMC.
