Crag features

The Ridgeway quarry lies in a rural hilltop location and contains a couple of quick drying walls of coarse sandstone. So far, sport climbing development has been restricted to the tall 'Black Slab' and short orange overhanging face, 'Boney Wall'.

Approach notes

From the A472 between Ystrad Mynach and Blackwood, where the carriageway changes from single to dual, turn south on the roundabout sign posted to Bryn Meadows Golf Club. Follow the lane for approximately 1 mile and park on the right at an obvious layby. Follow a path directly from the layby into the quarry on the right, approximately 50m.

If in doubt look for the tall radio mast about 100m beyond the quarry.

Nice little crag. The Black Slab wall is much larger than it looks in the pictures. It has some great technical climbs and is reminiscent of the walls in Navigation Quarry. All routes on this wall are currently in good condition (July 2015). Well worth a visit for locals.

The walls here are not loose, they are very solid. Yes the climbs may need a brush if they haven't been climbed for a few years (this is standard in outdoor environment) abseil for brushing is simple to arrange. The Boney Wall is accessed by walking around the pond at the foot of the cliff or by abseil.

Slab wall is ok, needs a massive brush down though! The Boney Wall is now in a pond. Can't see a way of getting to it without waders on. Visited on 23/06/2015.

A new route was added to the right side of the slab in March.
