The Amazing Port Vasgo © Steve Perry

Crag features

Great care must be taken by anyone climbing here as the coastal area at Port Vasgo and Talmine is protected by an SSSI - Site of Special Scientific Interest. This whole stretch of coast is magnificent for flowers and birds. The cliffs here can also be home to nesting kestrels on occasion, so please be aware during nesting seasons and kindly notify the moderator if nesting birds are seen.

Climbers must also be aware that the Scottish Primrose grows at Port Vasgo all around the headland above the climbing areas. This is a flower inherently valuable to British fauna. Scottish Primrose is indigenous to Scotland and only found along the north coast and Orkney.

This flower is protected by law.

Camping is best avoided entirely up on the headland area.

The Harbour wall can be reached by walking for 5 minutes past the turning place and scrambling down to the base.

The Main Climbing area is dominated by an amazing prow of rock, the Skull Island area lies just behind it.

The Brown Slab lies on the coast between Skull Island and the parking, near to a stone memorial.

Approach notes

Follow the road signposted Port Vasgo and park sensibly at the end. Please note - not in the turning place. Pass the gate and follow a grassy track for 5 minutes toward a beach. The main climbing area is on the headland right of this beach facing an island.

Skull Island is behind the prow and can be accessed by a scramble and step across the gap (roping up is adviseable)
